About My Blog/h2>
Welcome
Happy New Year Everyone! And welcome to my new website. I hope that in 2009, you enjoyed some of my stories and insights. The good news about 2010 is that I’ve decided to write with a bit more of a purpose here on my website. This is partially because I’ve been trending that way anyhow but moreso because I’ve gotten comments and suggestions about it. And so I’ve decided to turn up the volume a little bit.
Purpose Of My Site
Sharing the information was the first reason I started my site, and I openly and publicly encourage you to use as many avenues as possible to find information rather than relying on one source. The second reason I’m writing is because I do think I have some unique insights into career decision-making, stemming both from my professional experiences in consulting and entrepreneurship, as well as significant experience in a wide variety of other industries, functions, and companies before that. In my opinion, the beauty of my work experience is that I’ve had just as many bad ones as good ones. I was part of a really high profitable start-up that eventually didn’t make it and had to shut down just nine months later. And I’ve worked at another global consulting firm that went through severe layoffs and eventually merged about one year later, losing a couple of the firms top ten employees and laying off a significant number of people across the country. My biggest takeaway so far is that while sometimes raw intelligence and skills can sometimes be enough for admission into your top school or landing your dream job, taking your career to the next level is more often about having good timing, learning key professional skills to get through tough times and ambiguous projects, and most importantly having access to information so you can make the right decisions during critical transition points. And so I want to use my site as a way to be a voice for those who seek it, and over time to become a venue to centralize access to this information.
What Will I Write About
So as a result, I plan to write about business school and law school. Why? Well, because both are part of my current career journey, and it’s something a lot of people will want to hear about. As part of that I also plan to give a lot of details about various career alternatives that stem from both schools, talk about interesting leadership experiences, detail some of the memorable things that happen while in Chicago, and then continue relate a lot of this back to the state of our workforce, which is the critical issue of our time.
Kellogg JD-MBA Program
Specifically, I plan to do all of this through the lens of a Northwestern JD-MBA student. I think this will continue to be useful to grow the wonderful JD-MBA program here at Northwestern as well as to demystify the application process for the program, especially as I intend to answer more questions as people continue to write more often. It will also be useful more generally as people begin to see the different values that both degrees have and how all of those factors look here at Northwestern versus other institutions.
What About Me
In the meantime, you’ll probably also get to know a little about me. While I won’t spend too much time talking about that in this section, the one thing that’s always been true and that I hope shines through on my site is my passion to help and share information with others, especially in the realms of education and employment as well as the topic of leadership. If you’d like to see more detailed information about my background, please see the About Me tab above.
