Welcome
Happy New Year Everyone! And welcome to my newly designed website. I hope that in 2009, you enjoyed some of my stories and insights. The good news about 2010 is that I’ve decided to write with a bit more of a purpose and with a more targeted audience in mind. That’s not only because I’ve been trending that way anyhow but also because I’ve gotten comments and feedback suggesting it.

Purpose Of My Site
Sharing the information is the main reason I started my site, and I openly and publicly encourage you to use as many avenues as possible to find information rather than relying on a single source.  The second reason I’m writing is because I believe I have some unique insights into the careers decision-making process, stemming not only from my professional experiences in consulting, law, and entrepreneurship, but also from a wide variety of other industries, functions, and companies before that in addition to my current experiences as a student.

In my opinion, the best part of my work experience is that I’ve had just as many bad ones as good ones. I was part of a high-performing, profitable start-up in Silicon Valley that eventually didn’t make it and had to shut down less than a year later. Similarly, I worked at a global consulting firm in the Northeast that went through severe layoffs and was eventually acquired about one year later, losing a couple of the firms top employees and laying off a significant number of people across the country.  Conversely, I’ve worked in a managerial role at a Telecom that still thrives today.  I assisted the CEO of an internet start-up, where today her company is the leader in its space.  And I spent a little time at a bulge bracket investment bank. Today, it’s one of the two that still stands unchanged.

My biggest takeaway so far is that while sometimes raw intelligence and unique skills can be enough for admission into your top school or landing your dream job, taking your career to the next level is also about having good timing, finding quality professional mentors to help you in tough times and with ambiguous decisions, and most importantly having access to information during critical transition points, so you can make better, more informed decisions when they matter the most.  And so I want to use my site as a way to be a voice for those who seek it, and over time to become a venue to democratize access to this information that for many, is so hard to find, and for others who didn’t even know to look.  These people tend come from diverse backgrounds and have families that don’t always work in certain industries and so access to information is much more limited.

What Will I Write About
So as a result, I plan to write about my experiences professionally as well as  in business school and law school. One,  because both are part of my current career journey. And second, it’s something a lot of people will want to hear about. As part of that I also plan to detail various career alternatives that stem from both schools, talk about interesting leadership experiences, discuss some of the memorable things that happen in Chicago, and then continue relate a lot of this back to the state of our workforce, which to me is the critical issue of our time.

Kellogg JD-MBA Program
Specifically, I plan to do all of this through the lens of a Northwestern JD-MBA student. I think this will continue to be useful to grow the wonderful JD-MBA program here at Northwestern as well as to demystify the application process for the program, especially as I intend to answer more questions as people continue to write more often. It will also be useful more generally as people begin to see the different values that both degrees have and how all of those factors look here at Northwestern versus other institutions.

What About Me
In the meantime, you’ll probably also get to know a little about me. While I won’t spend too much time talking about that in this section, the one thing that’s always been true and that I hope shines through on my site is my passion to help and share information with others, especially in the realms of advancing education, obtaining high-potential careers, and also on leadership.  And over time you’ll also notice that I have a very strong interest in labor economics.  If you’d like to see more detailed information about my background, please see the About Me tab above.

Thanks for reading everyone!
