About My Blog

Welcome
Hi Everyone! Welcome to my website. I hope that in 2011, you enjoyed some of my stories and insights. The good news about 2012 is that I’ve decided to write even more frequently. That’s not only because I’ve been trending that way anyhow but also because seeing recent posts by people like Fred Wilson, I think blogging does have a lot of benefits.

Purpose Of My Site
Sharing the information is the main reason I started my site, and I openly and publicly encourage you to use as many avenues as possible to find information rather than relying on a single source.  The second reason I’m writing is because I believe I have some unique insights into the careers decision-making process, stemming from a pretty broad background in consulting, law, startups, government and non profit, just to name a few.

In my opinion, the best part of my work experience is that I’ve had just as many bad ones as good ones. I was part of a high-performing, profitable start-up in Silicon Valley that eventually had to shut down less than a year later. Similarly, I worked at a global consulting firm that went through severe layoffs and was eventually acquired about one year later. In the process they lost a number of top employees and laid off people across the country.  On the other hand, I’ve also had the good fortune of working in a managerial role at a Telecom that still thrives today.  I worked alongside the CEO of an internet start-up that got funding from all the top VCs and the CEO went on to be named a top 30 entrepreneur under 30. And I spent time at a bulge bracket investment bank. Today, it’s one of the two that still stands unchanged.

My biggest takeaway so far is that while sometimes raw intelligence and unique skills can be enough for admission into your top school or landing your dream job, taking your career to the next level is more having good timing, finding top mentors and most importantly having access to information during critical transition points. So in high school when you’re applying to college; in college when you’re looking for a job; and after college when you’re applying to grad school.

And so I want to use my site as a way to be a voice for those who seek it, and over time to become a venue to democratize access to this information that for many, is so hard to find, and for others who didn’t even know to look.  And my readers benefit immensely because many come from diverse backgrounds and from families where access is limited.

What Will I Write About
So as a result, I plan to write about my experiences professionally as well as in business school and law school. As part of that I also plan to detail various career alternatives that stem from both schools, talk about interesting leadership experiences, and then continue relate a lot of this back to the state of our education system and our workforce, which to me are the critical issues of our time.

Kellogg JD-MBA Program
Specifically, I plan to do all of this through the lens of a Northwestern JD-MBA student. I think this will continue to be useful to grow the wonderful JD-MBA program here at Northwestern as well as to demystify the application process for the program, especially as I intend to answer more questions as people continue to write more often. It will also be useful more generally as people begin to see the different values that both degrees have and how all of those factors look here at Northwestern versus other institutions.

What About Me
In the meantime, you’ll probably also get to know a little about me. While I won’t spend too much time talking about that in this section, the one thing that’s always been true and that I hope shines through on my site is my passion to help and share information with others, especially in the realms of advancing education, obtaining high-potential careers, and the idea of what it means to be a good leader.
