@fan--Thanks for taking the time to write a thoughtful comment. I'm on the Careers Committee at Northwestern, and I do know that we had commitments from more attorneys (attorneys not firms) than actually showed up. Although on the night of the event, they had yet to actually figure out why. From my one semester of experience here on campus so far, my impression is that the school works pretty hard and does really well organizing these things, which is why our placement rate is so high. But in this economy they seem to have all the leverage, and on average, they seem to be a bit more selective when deciding to come out to events.

I also have top 10 undergrad/law school and I think in this economy, you take every chance you get to meet with recruiters, build networks and enhance resumes. I have a lot of friends with similar backgrounds that have been laid off and think it's going to be a long time until we get back to the job market we had earlier, and I consider myself very well educated and connected. You're doing the right thing. Some of these firms also have really interesting people. Perkins coie has a guy named pat collins who just came out with a book about his work fighting corruption in Illinois, Winston Strawn has some former ambassadors.

You should be upset with northwestern, part of their reputation is placement and if they can't get recruiters on campus, they need to explain why.
